Calliope
is a small country town 21 kilometres drive west of Gladstone.
With a relaxed rural atmosphere, Calliope is surrounded by farms and a beautiful hinterland landscape.
The area boasts a national park, horse riding trails, bush camps, historical homesteads and lookouts with spectacular views over the entire Port Curtis area.
Calliope came into existence as Queensland's first officially proclaimed goldfield in 1863, went through a period of decline, and in recent times has experienced a minor boom as a result of the increasing importance of Gladstone.
The town was named after the HMS Calliope in 1854. It was around this time that settlers moved into the area. The town was surveyed and alluvial gold was found in the early 1860s. The population had reached 800 by 1864 but most of the gold was gone by the end of the decade. After that the town continued as a service centre for the local beef industry.
